IDEO and DESIGN 21 Launch “Living Climate Change Video Challenge”

February 16, 2010 by Staff

Living Climate Change Video Challenge

Earlier this month IDEO, a global design and innovation firm, and DESIGN 21, an online platform to promote design for the greater good, announced the Living Climate Change Video Challenge.

The Living Climate Change Video Challenge is a contest seeking original video submissions that envisions how climate change will impact life on Earth over the next 20 to 30 years. IDEO and Design 21 are looking for new thinking and thoughtful ideas on a sustainable future and are particularly concerned with which behaviors need to change or be preserved. Interested participants must submit a video or still image/text animation of no more than two minutes, accompanied by a 400-word description. The challenge is open to individuals and teams of all ages, but will be divided into two age categories: "18 and over" and "Under 18" with the permission of a parent or legal guardian.  Entries must be submitted by May 25, 2010.

One overall winner in each age category will be selected by a panel of judgets and will be awarded a grand prize of $3,000 plus a "Deep Dive" half-day workshop with IDEO.  An honorable mention will also be selected in each category and will be awarded $500. In addition, a "Most Popular" winner will be selected in each category based on public voting from the DESIGN 21 community.

"Living Climate Change is an open invitation to designers and non-designers alike to think creatively about an issue that impacts us all," says Jennifer Leonard, IDEO designer and co-editor of Livingclimatechange.com. "Our hope is that it will stimulate the kind of dialogue that creates community, supports optimism and inspires new choices."

According to DESIGN 21 Founder, Haruko Smith, "We are thrilled to partner with IDEO on this social design project because we both believe that smart design can solve real-world problems on a global scale." Smith adds, "As a joint venture between Felissimo and UNESCO, DESIGN 21 is guided by the premise that education, science, technology, and culture are critical tools to disseminate knowledge, create awareness
and foster dialogue. Hopefully, this discussion will motivate designers to rethink the future."
